Spleen Qi: The Foundation of Digestion and Energy

The Spleen's Role in TCM

The Spleen is the Earth element organ and the center of the TCM digestive system. Its primary job is to transform food and drink into Qi (energy) and Blood, then transport these nutrients throughout the body. In Western terms, it covers pancreas function, digestion, metabolism, and energy production. When Spleen Qi is strong, digestion is efficient, energy is abundant, muscles are toned, and thinking is clear.

Signs of Weak Spleen Qi

Chronic fatigue (especially after eating), bloating and gas, loose stools or diarrhea, poor appetite, easy bruising, weak muscles, overthinking and worry, pale complexion, cold hands and feet, edema (water retention), heavy feeling in body, sugar cravings, prolapse of organs (in severe cases).

What Weakens the Spleen

1. Cold and raw foods: Ice water, salads, smoothies, ice cream. 2. Irregular eating: Skipping meals, eating too fast, eating while working. 3. Overthinking: The Spleen is damaged by excessive study and worry. 4. Sugar and sweets: Sugar creates Dampness, which blocks Spleen function. 5. Dairy products: Heavy and Damp-forming. 6. Lack of movement: Sedentary lifestyle weakens Spleen Qi.

Foods That Strengthen Spleen Qi

Top Spleen tonics: Sweet potato (warming, sweet, strengthens Qi), rice congee (easy to digest, healing), pumpkin (warm, sweet), carrot (nourishes Spleen), ginger (warms Spleen), chicken (warming, nourishing), beef (strengthens Spleen and Blood), jujube dates (tonify Spleen Qi), yam (Chinese yam/Dioscorea), lotus seed (astringent, tonifies Spleen). Golden rule: Eat warm, cooked, easily digestible foods. Drink warm water, not cold.

Acupressure Points

ST36 (Zusanli): 'Leg Three Miles' — the #1 point for strengthening Qi. Located 4 fingers below kneecap, one finger-width lateral. SP6 (Sanyinjiao): Strengthens Spleen, nourishes Blood. CV12 (Zhongwan): Front-mu point of Stomach — regulates digestion. BL20 (Pishu): Spleen Back-Shu point — directly tonifies Spleen. CV6 (Qihai): 'Sea of Qi' — builds original Qi.

The Spleen Lifestyle

1. Eat at regular times (7-8 AM, 12-1 PM, 6-7 PM). 2. Eat warm, cooked foods. Replace salads with steamed vegetables. 3. Drink warm water or ginger tea, never ice water. 4. Chew thoroughly (20-30 times per bite). 5. Stop eating before completely full (80% rule). 6. Don't eat while angry, stressed, or working. 7. Walk 15 minutes after meals. 8. Include root vegetables in diet daily. 9. Limit sugar and dairy. 10. Practice worry-free eating: Put away phone and computer.
