TCM Food Energetics: The Complete Guide to Thermal Nature of Foods

The TCM Food Classification System

In Western nutrition, foods are classified by calories, macros, and micronutrients. In TCM, foods are classified by their thermal nature and flavor. Each food has an energetic effect on the body — warming, cooling, drying, moistening, ascending, or descending. This system has been refined over 2,500 years of clinical observation.

The Four Thermal Natures

Cold: Watermelon, seaweed, salt, soy sauce, crab. Cools heat conditions. Cool: Cucumber, celery, tomato, mint, spinach, mung bean. Neutral: Rice, potato, carrot, pork, beef, egg. Warm: Ginger, garlic, chicken, lamb, shrimp, peach, cherry. Hot: Chili, cinnamon, pepper, dried ginger. Warms cold conditions.

The Five Flavors and Their Organs

Sour → Liver: Lemon, vinegar, plum. Astringent, consolidates. Bitter → Heart: Kale, coffee, dark chocolate. Drains heat, dries damp. Sweet → Spleen: Sweet potato, rice, dates. Nourishes, moistens, harmonizes. Pungent → Lungs: Onion, garlic, ginger. Disperses, moves Qi. Salty → Kidneys: Seaweed, miso, salt. Softens hardness, moistens dryness.

Eating for Your Constitution

If you run cold (Yang deficiency): Eat mostly warm and neutral foods. Add ginger, cinnamon, and warming spices. Avoid raw salads and cold drinks. If you run hot (Yin deficiency or Heat): Eat mostly cool and neutral foods. Add cucumber, mung beans, and mint. Avoid spicy and greasy foods. If you have Dampness: Eat warm, cooked, easily digestible foods. Avoid dairy, sweets, and fried foods.

Seasonal Eating by Thermal Nature

Spring: Add sweet and pungent foods (greens, sprouts, young plants) to support Liver's outward energy. Summer: Eat cooling foods (watermelon, cucumber) to balance Fire. Late Summer: Mild, sweet, warm foods (squash, sweet potato) to support Earth. Autumn: Pungent and warm foods (ginger, garlic) to support Metal's descending energy. Winter: Warm and salty foods (lamb stew, root vegetables, dark foods) to support Water.

TCM Food Combinations

Ginger + brown sugar: Warms and moves Blood (good for period cramps). Mung bean + lotus seed: Clears heat and nourishes Spleen. Yam + jujube: Strengthens Spleen and nourishes Blood. Pear + rock sugar: Moistens Lungs and stops cough. Walnut + sesame: Nourishes Kidney Jing and Blood. These combinations have synergistic effects that go beyond individual ingredients.
