Insomnia Types in TCM: Find Your Sleep Pattern

Insomnia in TCM

Insomnia is one of the most common reasons people seek TCM treatment. The approach is never one-size-fits-all. TCM identifies at least 5 different patterns of insomnia, each requiring different foods, herbs, acupressure, and lifestyle adjustments. Identifying YOUR pattern is the key to lasting relief.

Type 1: Difficulty Falling Asleep (Heart Blood Deficiency)

You lie in bed for hours, mind racing, but can't fall asleep. Often accompanied by: anxiety, palpitations, pale complexion, poor memory, dizziness. Your Heart doesn't have enough Blood to anchor the Shen (spirit). Treatment: Nourish Heart Blood. Foods: Jujube dates, longan, lotus seeds. Herb: Gui Pi Tang. Point: HT7, SP6.

Type 2: Waking 1-3 AM (Liver Fire/Heat)

You fall asleep fine but wake around 1-3 AM and can't get back to sleep. Often with: irritability, red eyes, bitter taste, tension headaches. The Liver meridian peaks 1-3 AM — Liver Fire wakes you. Treatment: Clear Liver Fire. Foods: Celery, chrysanthemum tea. Herb: Long Dan Xie Gan Tang. Points: LV2, LV3, GB20.

Type 3: Waking 3-5 AM (Lung Heat/Qi Deficiency)

You wake between 3-5 AM with anxiety, palpitations, or respiratory symptoms. Lung meridian peaks 3-5 AM. Often with: grief, sadness, dry cough, weak immunity. Treatment: Clear Lung Heat or strengthen Lung Qi. Foods: Pear, lily bulb, honey. Points: LU7, LU9.

Type 4: Frequent Waking (Heart-Kidney Disharmony)

You wake every 1-2 hours throughout the night. Light, restless sleep with vivid dreams. Often with: night sweats, tinnitus, low back pain, anxiety. Kidney Water cannot cool Heart Fire. Treatment: Communicate Heart and Kidney. Herb: Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan. Foods: Lotus seeds, jujube. Points: KD3, HT7.

Type 5: Waking Too Early (Liver/Gallbladder)

You wake at 4-5 AM and can't go back to sleep. You feel tired but wired. Often with: irritability, headache, PMS, digestive issues. Treatment: Regulate Liver and Gallbladder. Herb: Xiao Yao San. Points: LV3, GB20. General sleep protocol: 1. Be in bed by 10:30 PM. 2. No screens after 9 PM. 3. Hot foot bath 20 min before bed. 4. Press HT7 and Yintang for 3 minutes. 5. Magnesium glycinate 400mg. 6. Bedroom: cool, dark, quiet. 7. No caffeine after 2 PM. 8. Heavy blanket (weighted) if anxious.
