The Heart is the Emperor of all organs in TCM. It governs Blood and houses the Shen (spirit/consciousness). When the Heart is healthy, the eyes are bright, sleep is deep, thinking is clear, and emotions are balanced. All joy originates from the Heart. The Heart opens into the tongue and shows its health on the face (complexion).
The Shen becomes disturbed when: 1. Heart Fire blazes upward (from stress, over-stimulation). 2. Heart Blood is deficient (Shen has no anchor). 3. Heart Yin is deficient (no cooling moisture). 4. Phlegm misting the mind (poor digestion creates Phlegm). Modern triggers: Chronic stress, excessive screen time, caffeine, trauma, poor sleep, repressed emotions, overwork.
Insomnia (difficulty falling asleep), anxiety and panic attacks, palpitations, restlessness, excessive dreaming, talking during sleep, mood swings, inability to focus, feeling 'ungrounded' or disconnected, dull or lifeless eyes, red face, bitter taste in mouth.
Lotus seeds (Lian Zi): Calm Shen, nourish Heart. Jujube dates (Da Zao): Nourish Heart Blood. Wheat (Xiao Mai): Nourishes Heart Yin. Longan fruit (Gui Yuan): Calms Shen. Lily bulb (Bai He): Clears Heart Heat. Oyster shell (Mu Li): Anchors floating Yang. Chamomile: Gently clears Heart Heat. Avoid: Coffee, alcohol, spicy food, chocolate (all generate Heart Fire).
HT7 (Shenmen): 'Spirit Gate' — the master point for calming Shen. Located on wrist crease, little finger side. PC6 (Neiguan): 'Inner Gate' — calms anxiety, palpitations. Yintang (EX-HN3): Third eye point — quiets the mind, relieves anxiety. Anmian: 'Peaceful Sleep' point — behind ear, for insomnia. CV14 (Juque): Heart front-mu point — regulates Heart Qi. CV15 (Jiuwei): Calms the mind, treats anxiety.
Morning: 5-minute meditation before checking phone. Press HT7 upon waking. Breakfast: Warm oatmeal with jujube dates and longan. Midday: Take 10 deep breaths (4 counts in, 6 counts out). Lunch: Include cooling foods (cucumber, celery). Afternoon: Avoid all caffeine. Evening: Dim lights after sunset. No screens 1 hour before bed. Foot soak: Hot water with rose petals or chamomile for 20 minutes. Before sleep: Press Yintang and HT7 for 3 minutes. Practice gratitude: Write 3 things you're grateful for. If racing thoughts: Count breaths backwards from 100.
