Wei Qi: The TCM Immune Defense System Explained

What Is Wei Qi?

Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) is the TCM equivalent of the immune system. It circulates on the surface of the body, forming a protective shield against pathogenic factors (Cold, Wind, Heat, Damp). Wei Qi is produced by the Lungs from the air you breathe and the food the Spleen transforms. When Wei Qi is strong, you rarely get sick. When weak, you catch every cold going around.

How Wei Qi Works

Wei Qi circulates between the skin and muscles, warming the organs and regulating the opening and closing of pores. When it detects a pathogen, it closes pores (causing chills) and fights the invader (causing fever). This is why TCM treats colds at the 'exterior' level — pushing the pathogen out before it penetrates deeper.

Signs of Weak Wei Qi

Frequent colds (more than 3 per year), slow recovery from illness, spontaneous sweating, catching colds easily from drafts, low energy, pale complexion, shortness of breath, weak voice, allergic rhinitis, and asthma.

Foods That Strengthen Wei Qi

Astragalus (Huang Qi): The premier immune tonic. Add to soups. Shiitake and Maitake mushrooms: Rich in beta-glucans. Garlic: Natural antimicrobial, enters Lung meridian. Ginger: Fresh ginger tea daily. Goji berries: Nourish Blood and support immunity. Sweet potato: Strengthens Spleen. Rice congee with jujube: Gentle immune support.

Acupressure Points for Immunity

LU7 (Lieque): Strengthens Lung Qi and Wei Qi. ST36 (Zusanli): The most important point for immune strength. BL12 (Fengmen): 'Wind Gate' — clears pathogens. BL13 (Feishu): Lung Back-Shu point, strengthens respiratory immunity. LI11 (Quchi): Clears heat and supports immune response. GB20 (Fengchi): Relieves neck tension from fighting off Wind.

Lifestyle for Strong Wei Qi

1. Sleep before 11 PM (Lung time is 3-5 AM — needs rest). 2. Dress warmly, especially neck and lower back. 3. Avoid air conditioning blowing directly on you. 4. Exercise moderately (over-exercise depletes Wei Qi). 5. Eat warm, cooked foods. 6. Practice deep breathing ( strengthens Lungs ). 7. Take astragalus soup weekly during cold and flu season.
