In Western medicine, the liver is an organ that filters toxins, metabolizes drugs, and produces bile. In TCM, the Liver system encompasses the physical organ plus its energetic functions: ensuring smooth flow of Qi and Blood throughout the body, storing Blood, regulating menstruation, controlling the tendons and ligaments, and housing the ethereal soul (Hun). When the Liver is healthy, energy flows smoothly, emotions are balanced, and the body is flexible.
Liver Qi Stagnation is perhaps the most common TCM diagnosis in modern life. Caused by stress, repressed emotions, and irregular eating habits. Symptoms include: irritability and mood swings, chest and rib-side distension, PMS and painful periods, sighing frequently, feeling a lump in the throat, irregular bowel patterns, waking 1-3 AM.
When Liver Qi stagnation persists, it can transform into Liver Fire. Symptoms: anger and rage, red face and bloodshot eyes, bitter taste in mouth, headache at the temples, tinnitus (ringing ears), nosebleeds, and severe insomnia. Contributing factors: chronic stress, alcohol, spicy and greasy foods, and prolonged Liver Qi stagnation.
Dark green vegetables (spinach, kale, broccoli), celery, carrot, goji berries, chrysanthemum tea, mint tea, green tea, apple cider vinegar (small amounts), lemon water (warm), and dandelion greens. Avoid: excessive alcohol, spicy foods, fried foods, and overeating.
LV3 (Taichong): Between big toe and second toe. The #1 point for moving Liver Qi. GB20 (Fengchi): Base of skull. Relieves headaches from Liver Yang rising. LI4 (Hegu): Between thumb and index finger. Moves Qi and relieves pain (contraindicated during pregnancy). LV14 (Qimen): On the ribcage. Relieves chest and rib distension. PC6 (Neiguan): Inner wrist. Calms the Liver and reduces nausea.
Morning: Warm lemon water + stretching. Lunch: Largest meal with plenty of greens. Afternoon: Walk 15 minutes (moves Liver Qi). Evening: Light dinner by 7 PM. Before bed: Hot foot soak for 20 minutes (draws Liver Yang down from the head). In bed by 11 PM (Gallbladder time, just before Liver time). Weekly: At least one day free from stress and screens.
