Estrogen Dominance: The TCM Approach to Hormone Balance

What Is Estrogen Dominance?

Estrogen dominance occurs when estrogen levels are too high relative to progesterone. This can happen from excessive estrogen production, poor estrogen metabolism/detox, or exposure to xenoestrogens (BPA, phthalates). In TCM, this pattern involves Liver Qi stagnation (the Liver metabolizes hormones), Spleen Qi deficiency (poor transformation), and Damp accumulation (cysts, fibroids, weight gain).

Signs of Estrogen Dominance

PMS with breast tenderness and mood swings, heavy or painful periods, fibroids and cysts, endometriosis, weight gain (especially hips/thighs), brain fog, fatigue, insomnia, thyroid dysfunction, low libido, irregular periods, acne along jawline, hair thinning.

The Liver-Hormone Connection

The Liver is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi and Blood, including the metabolism and detoxification of hormones. When Liver Qi stagnates (from stress, anger, poor diet), hormones are not properly processed and recycled, leading to estrogen buildup. Supporting Liver health is the #1 strategy for hormone balance.

Foods to Balance Estrogen

Cruciferous vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage (contain DIM and sulforaphane that help metabolize estrogen). Flaxseeds: 2 tbsp daily (lignans bind excess estrogen). Fiber-rich foods: Help excrete excess estrogen through stool. Liver-supporting: Dandelion, burdock root, beets. Phytoestrogens: Soy (moderate), legumes (help regulate). Anti-inflammatory: Turmeric, ginger, green tea. Avoid: Conventional dairy and meat (xenoestrogens), plastic containers, non-organic produce (pesticides act as xenoestrogens).

Acupressure for Hormone Balance

LV3 (Taichong): The #1 point for Liver Qi — moves stagnant energy. SP6 (Sanyinjiao): The #1 women's health point — regulates hormones. CV4 (Guanyuan): Below navel — strengthens uterus and Kidneys. LV14 (Qimen): Releases chest tightness and breast tenderness. ST36 (Zusanli): Strengthens Spleen to transform Damp. GB26 (Daimai): 'Belt Vessel' point — regulates the waist and lower body circulation.

Complete Protocol

1. Morning: Warm lemon water (supports Liver detox). 2. Breakfast: Add 2 tbsp ground flaxseeds. 3. Lunch: Large portion of cruciferous vegetables. 4. Afternoon: Green tea (supports metabolism). 5. Evening: Castor oil pack on liver area (right ribs) for 30 min. 6. Before bed: Press LV3 and SP6. 7. Reduce plastic use. 8. Switch to natural personal care products. 9. Manage stress: The Liver-stress connection is critical.
