Endometriosis Pain Relief: The TCM Approach

Endometriosis in TCM

Endometriosis is classified as 'Blood Stasis in the Lower Jiao' in TCM. Tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing inflammation and pain. In TCM, this is Blood that has stagnated — it should flow freely but instead pools and congeals. The stasis causes severe stabbing pain, especially during periods. The root involves Liver Qi stagnation (stress), Cold in the uterus, and Kidney deficiency.

Symptom Patterns

1. Blood Stasis: Severe stabbing pelvic pain, dark clotty periods, fixed pain location, purple tongue. 2. Cold in Uterus: Pain relieved by warmth, pale periods with clots, cold abdomen, worse in cold weather. 3. Qi Stagnation with Blood Stasis: Pain that moves or varies, mood-related worsening, breast tenderness. 4. Kidney Deficiency with Stasis: Chronic pain, low back weakness, infertility, worse with fatigue.

Foods for Endometriosis

Blood-moving: Turmeric, ginger, rose tea, vinegar, eggplant, chives. Anti-inflammatory: Wild fish, green leafy vegetables, berries, olive oil. Warming (for cold type): Ginger tea, cinnamon, lamb, fennel, black pepper. Avoid: Cold/raw foods, dairy (increases Damp), excessive sugar, alcohol (creates Damp-Heat), caffeine (worsens pain).

Reduce stress (stress worsens pain via Liver Qi stagnation). 6. Exercise: Gentle, not too intense. Yoga for pelvic blood flow. 7. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. 8. Track pain patterns. 9.
