Dampness is a pathogenic factor in Chinese Medicine that results from impaired fluid metabolism. It is heavy, sticky, slow-moving, and difficult to resolve. Think of it as internal humidity — a muddy, sluggish condition that clogs your organ systems and drains your energy. Dampness often originates from a weak Spleen that cannot properly transform and transport fluids.
If you have internal dampness, you may experience: persistent fatigue (especially after eating), brain fog and difficulty concentrating, heavy feeling in limbs or head, bloating and loose stools, sticky mouth sensation in the morning, weight gain that's hard to lose, edema or water retention, recurrent yeast infections or fungal issues, thick coated tongue.
The #1 cause is diet: cold drinks, raw salads, dairy products, excessive sweets, fried and greasy foods, too much alcohol. Other causes: living in damp environments, lack of exercise, excessive sitting, chronic worry (weakens Spleen), wearing wet clothes or hair, sleeping on damp ground.
In TCM, the Spleen is responsible for transforming food into energy and transporting fluids. When the Spleen is weak — from poor diet, overthinking, or exhaustion — fluids accumulate and become Dampness. It's a vicious cycle: Dampness further weakens the Spleen, creating more Dampness. Breaking this cycle requires both removing Damp foods AND strengthening the Spleen.
Add these damp-resolving foods: Job's tears (coix seed), adzuki beans, mung beans, ginger, cardamom, Chenpi (aged tangerine peel), radish, celery, and warm soups. Avoid these damp-creating foods: cold beverages, ice cream, dairy, raw salads, bananas, fried foods, refined sugar, and excessive bread.
SP9 (Yinlingquan): Below the knee, inside of shinbone. The premier point for resolving dampness. ST36 (Zusanli): Below knee, outside of shinbone. Strengthens Spleen to prevent dampness. CV9 (Shuifen): On the midline of abdomen, above navel. Resolves water retention. CV12 (Zhongwan): Midway between navel and sternum. Strengthens digestion.
1. Sweat daily (exercise or sauna). 2. Stop eating by 7 PM. 3. Replace cold breakfast with warm congee. 4. Drink ginger tea throughout the day. 5. Avoid air conditioning blowing directly on you. 6. Use a dehumidifier in your bedroom. 7. Get acupuncture if possible. Most people notice improvement within 2-4 weeks of dietary changes.
