TCM for Children: Pediatric Care Guide

TCM Pediatrics: A Gentle Approach

Traditional Chinese Medicine has treated children for thousands of years using gentle, non-invasive techniques. Pediatric TCM focuses on strengthening the child's Spleen and Lung systems, which are constitutionally weak in children, making them vulnerable to digestive issues and respiratory infections.

Children's Constitutional Differences

In TCM, children have pure Yang energy — they grow fast, get sick fast, and recover fast. Their Spleen is delicate (easily damaged by poor diet), their Lungs are vulnerable (frequent colds), and their Liver can easily become overactive (febrile seizures). Understanding these patterns helps parents support natural healing.

Pediatric Acupressure

Gentle massage of specific points is safe and effective for children. For colic: rub abdomen clockwise 100 times. For cough: knead PC6 on inner wrist. For sleep: gently press HT7 on wrist crease. For appetite: rub ST36 below the knee. For fever: push from wrist to elbow along the Lung meridian.

Diet Therapy for Children

Warm, cooked, easily digestible foods are key. Congee (rice porridge) is the ideal child breakfast. Avoid: cold milk, raw vegetables, excess sweets, fried foods. Add: jujube dates for Spleen, yam for digestion, carrot for Lung, ginger for nausea.

Common Conditions and TCM Solutions

Colic and reflux: Spleen Qi deficiency — warm foods, gentle abdominal massage, avoid overfeeding. Frequent colds: Lung Qi deficiency — Lung-friendly foods (pear, lily bulb, tremella), keep neck and upper back warm. Eczema: Damp-Heat — reduce dairy, sugar, add cooling foods. Sleep issues: Heart Fire or Spleen deficiency — avoid stimulating foods, gentle HT7 massage before bed.

When to See a Practitioner

Home care is appropriate for mild, acute issues. Consult a licensed TCM practitioner for: chronic conditions lasting >2 weeks, recurring infections, developmental concerns, any condition with high fever. TCM complements but does not replace pediatric medical care.
